At First Glance

Its been a while since I posted anything...no valid reason, but better late than sorry. Have you ever been a situation where people judge you by just looking at you or the other way round. When we see someone for the first time it is our first glance that gives us our first impressions of them. As we mature and get older we are taught that first impressions are the most important, that they are the lasting impression. I think at one point in my life I actually believed it but now that I have gotten a bit of experience in life I know that first glances are not always an accurate way to judge someone. If you think about it, it is almost as if some of lifes quotes and what we are taught clash with each other. Things like, don’t judge a book by it’s cover and then first impressions are important and long lasting. I understand that when we meet someone for the first time we want it to be perfect but it goes against not judging a book by it’s cover don’t you think. Your first glance of someone may be an image that they want you to see, not what it actually is.

Life is a game that we all want to win. We have different aspects that we want to excel in the most and then there are the ones that society deems important that we strive towards because we are afraid of falling behind in the rat race of life. In my opinion the aspects that are driven by society are the ones that end up taking precedent over what we actually want to acheive in life. Now, I know that the idea of first impressions being vital is usually in professional settings however this way of thinking has spilled over into personal settings as well. He or she looks a certain way or has on something that was from last season or better yet, she has on the new Christian Louboutins so she must have it all. The idea that first impressions are vital is something that we have accepted as an unconfirmed life altering rule that we must follow. Take it with a grain of salt.

At first glance we want to look the part so we do our best to pull this off in an attempt to hide what is really going on beneath the exterior. We ALL have flaws, we all have something “not so perfect” going on in our lives that we don’t want to be seen at first glance. This age old tale that we have adopted to be a fact has persuaded us to accept one and dismiss the other BUT still claim to live by the quote we dismiss. It is nothing wrong with having a protective barrier to shield you from the world but when you let your guard down OR slip up and show the rest of you you are judged and given a harsher sentence. Let’s face it, we all have our Mr’s Doubtfire face that we put on so that we can make it and get to where we want to be. When the mask comes off and the rest of our personality is revealed that doesn’t mean we are any less of the person that you thought we was, it just means that it is more to us than you thought.

At first glance your initial judgement of others may not be as accurate as you think, be careful by what you see for it may be what they want you to see. This doesn’t have to be a bad thing, it is just our way of protecting ourselves and making it in the world today that is, well let’s face it—hypocrtical. Don’t fall victim to the age old lesson and misjudge someone based on what you see, look a little deeper and give yourself time to understand the meaning of the cover.
